For the past month, people living near America’s east coast have excitedly reported sightings of mysterious objects in the night sky: some flash bright, colourful lights and move erratically through the air. They can hover for hours, sometimes appearing in groups. It smacks of a Hollywood film. The truth is probably quite boring—but unidentified objects can still wreak havoc in the sky.
